ANIMAL SCIENCES

Putting stock in livestock can be a complex proposition: Geography and climate have forced Israeli agriculture to innovate, intensify, and diversify from the start - developing cost-effecti ve, customized, computerized nutrition programs for livestock, and turning Israel into a modern Noah's ark - raising crocodiles and ostriches, alongside traditional farm animals.
Even farming fish in the desert is no longer the province of prophesy.

The Department of Animal Sciences deals with both the physiology and the pathology and immunology of farm animals - with a strong emphasis on optimal rations and conditions for poultry and problems of re production and nutrition among ruminants in hot climates, as well as research in aquaculture. Nutritional studies include efforts to recycle agricultural waste.

Research work includes * a biofilter for high-density fish ponds * reducing heat stress among cattle by forced ventilation * enhancing egg production by manipulating color/quality of lighti ng in chicken houses.
