Coccoidea

Coccoidea

A superfamily in the order Hemiptera, infraorder Coccomorpha, usually known as scale insects, consisting of about 8000 taxa. All species are phytophagous. The body of the females usually grows under wax covers of different shapes and colors. Except for the Pseudococcidae (mealybugs), the post-nymphal stages of all Coccoidea are usually immobile, remaining attached to the host plant throughout their lives. The short-lived males have only a single pair of wings and do not feed. The superfamily contains important families of pests, such as the Asterolecaniidae, Coccidae, Diaspididae, Margarodidae and Pseudococcidae.
