Gryllotalpidae
A small family in the order Orthoptera whose members live in the soil. They have cylindrical bodies, about 3–5 cm long, with small or reduced eyes and strong, shovel-like fore legs, adapted for burrowing (hence their common name: mole crickets). They feed on roots, small animals or detritus. The males produce a strong song that attracts the females. A pest species is Gryllotalpa tali (formerly known as Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa L.).
