Lasiocampidae

A cosmopolitan family of Lepidoptera, with about 2000 species in over 150 genera. They are commonly called eggars, snout moths or lappet moths, their hairy bodies are large and brownish, with broad wings, and they lay many eggs. The large larvae (caterpillars) are hairy, and bear a pair of dorsal glands on their abdomens. They feed on the leaves of trees and shrubs and may live gregariously within silk nests. Eriogaster amygdali is a minor pest of almond.
