Lonchaeidae

A family of about 500 described species in the suborder Brachycera (Diptera), commonly known as lance flies. The adults have blue-black, metallic bodies and they usually occur in wooded areas. The larvae are mostly phytophagous; some are agricultural pests, especially in the Neotropics. Others feed on fungi, dung and a few are predatory.
