Melanin

A polymer of derivatives of the amino acid tyrosine, which imparts a dark color to the insect cuticle. It is also involved in immunological responses to microbial infections and in defense against endoparasitoids, which is brought about by the deposition of a dark, impenetrable boundary around the eggs.
