Muscidae

A family of about 4000 species in the suborder Nematocera. It includes the house and stable flies and several species of forensic interest, like blow flies. The larvae are maggots, living in decaying vegetation, dry and wet soil, nests of insects and birds, fresh water, and carrion. Atherigona soccata is a pest of many Gramineae (Poaceae).
