Pitfall trap

A device used to trap insects that move on the soil surface. It consists of a container with smooth sides that is buried so that its lips are level with the soil surface. Insects that fall in cannot get out. Alcohol or other substances may be placed in the container, and kills any insects that fall in. Pitfall traps are used as a passive sampling technique.
