A family in the order Lepidoptera of about 2,300 very large species. The adults are brightly colored and often have differently-colored or transparent eyespots on both pairs of wings, which are bipectinate. The larvae bear tubercules that carry stinging hairs. The larvae of a few species produce silk webs of commercial value.
