Systematic position: Insecta, Holometabola, Hymenopetra, Apocrita, Vespoidea.

A family of about 560 large solitary ectoparasitoids of scarabaeid larvae. They have black bodies with yellow or red bands. Females locate these larvae in the soil, paralyze them and lay an egg on their bodies. The males find the emerging females and mate. The adult are minor pollinators of wildflowers and some serve as biocontrol agents, by parasitizing scarabaeids pests. Pentodon algerinum is a member of this family.
