Sphingidae

A family of large moths (Lepidoptera), known as hawk moths, sphinx moths or hornworms, consisting of about 1,400 species. The adults feed on nectar, are mainly active at night and are fast fliers. Most larvae are phytophagous and bear a protuberance (“horn”) on their last abdominal segment. Acherontia atropos and Hippotion celerio are members of this family.
