The main focus of research is plant-pathogen interactions. Plant pathogens challenge our efforts to maximize crop production. A limited understanding of the pathogenesis and defense mechanisms involved in plant-pathogen interactions often obstruct those efforts. Our special interest is characterizing the impact of secondary metabolites on fungal phytopathogens. In addition, we are studying the genes involved in glucosinolate regulation and in other plant defense responses. Our knowledge on the regulation of plant defense pathways may contribute in the long term to the development of sophisticated plant-protection strategies.

Research focuses on understanding how different plant species (especifically Arabidopsis, Medicago, Tomato, Passion Fruit, Apple and Longan) use different environmental cues (especially changes in ambient temperatures) to correctly time flowering. We aim to identify both common and species-specific molecular components of this mechanism. We are interested in developing general platforms to either delay or expedite the transition to flowering in plants with agronomic importance. Several approaches are being used to study these topics, including physiology, molecular biology, molecular genetics and chemical genetics.
